Cayte Designs _ Handweaving Shafts

ABOUT

_____

Annabelle Cayte Loweth, b.1998 London, is a designer, textile arts and hand weaver based in the UK.

Annabelle is a visually impaired woven textile designer with an eye for colour, texture, and composition, inspired by the beauty of her surroundings and providing unique design perspectives.

Having been born with a severe visual impairment, Annabelle can observe the world from a unique and distinct perspective. She focuses on the more defining details, textures, and close structures of media that others may overlook.

Following a work placement at the London-based print studio Clarissa Hulse, Annabelle discovered her passion for working and creating fabrics rich in colour and texture. Annabelle continued to explore her love for textiles with a Foundation Degree in Art and Design at Loughborough University, where she received a Distinction, and subsequently progressed onto a BA in Textiles, during which she discovered her passion for weave.

Inspired by natural and architectural environments, Annabelle uses both first-hand detailed drawing and photography to inform her design work. Combined with a sensitive approach to colour, she has developed a refined eye for subtle, neutral-toned colour palettes, which she translates onto the loom and into her woven fabrics.

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Annabelle aims to combine responsible and ethical design in her work. This focus is constantly evolving, and by feeding her knowledge, she aims to reduce her environmental impact. Natural resources and sustainable alternatives are fundamental to her work, and her sourcing of yarns is carefully considered. This sustainable focus is also evidenced in her work itself, drawing attention to the issues reflected through the juxtaposition of natural and architectural environments.

Upon completing her degree, Annabelle looks to gain further experience working within the textiles industry, utilising her love of texture, colour, and artisanal practices.
